He was a wonderful actor, and his Academy Award for the role of Maggio in "From Here to Eternity" was well deserved. His last major role was in "The First Deadly Sin" (1980), and he did some cameo roles after that. I don't know the main reason why he did not do more films, but it could have been the quality of the scripts being presented to him, or he wanted the latter part of his life/career to be more focused on singing and performing.
